Fun fact for the day: did you know that despite what fitness influencers might preach, urine DOESN'T need to be clear! Clear is NOT the goal!

Did you know that too much water can actually stress the kidneys (and extreme over-hydration can be fatal). Not to scare you, that is rare! Just a reminder that like basically all things, too much is not a good thing.

Striving for clear urine usually leads to excess water intake. If it’s a light yellow that is perfect and you don’t need to drink any extra (or if it’s your kid, they don’t need extra water). For babies, you want to see at least 3 very wet diapers during the day.

If urine gets darker and becomes more like a beer color or apple juice, you’ll want to increase your child's water intake. Keep in mind that you don't necessarily need to give them straight water in a cup! So many foods are packed with water, and that all counts toward their daily needs. So when it comes to drinking water from a cup, they only need about 1 cup per year of age.

They may drink more than that, and that’s totally fine. Especially on days they’re extra active or it’s very hot outside.

Here are some foods that are high in water content:
- Fresh and frozen fruit and veggies, especially melon, strawberries, peaches, pineapple, cucumber, celery, and zucchini.
- Yogurt
- Oatmeal
- Soup
- Popsicles
- Cottage cheese
- Smoothies

Drinking milk, diluted juice, a smoothie, or even a popsicle will also provide them with water, too.

Do you have a fruit snack obsessed kid? Unfortunately even the fruit snacks that are marketed as "healthy" are usually still loaded with added sugar which is such a bummer when you’re trying to give them a snack, not a full on dessert!

I've rounded up my favorite fruit snack alternatives that you can buy on Amazon and added them to my go-to healthy snack list! The link to check it out is my bio!

And a side note: if you're wondering what age these snacks are safe for, I would say 3+ to be on the safe side. BUT to be 100% honest I’ve never personally tried any of them (my kids have!) because I have a weird aversion to chewy things 🙈 so I’m not sure how chewy they are. Sometimes we devalue our jobs as mothers because it just feels routine. But the truth is, you are valued, you are appreciated, and you are enough.

Want to know something that REALLY bothers me? The unrealistic expectations and standards for parents when it comes to feeding your kids.

Is it possible to feed your kids ONLY the most nutritious, least processed, completely plant-based, meals from scratch every day?

Sure.

But would doing that cause me to sacrifice my mental health, time that I could spend taking care of myself, or energy I could put into connecting with my family or friends!?

Absolutely.

It's also important to me that I paint a realistic picture for my kids of what eating healthy really looks like in day to day life. Because I don’t believe in extremes or absolutes. Life with zero pizza and zero chips? No thank you. That’s not going to improve our quality of life, or health — I’m completely serious.

Spoiler alert: if you eat only the healthiest foods 100% of the time, you are still not guaranteed perfect health.

And one more thing to note: doing so doesn't make you a better parent.

Mama, I want to encourage you to stop putting unrealistic expectations on yourself or other parents. It doesn’t help any of us.

Be kind to yourself and others today, friends. We're in this together!
