If you find yourself in this same spot at your house just as often as me, then you probably need some easy foods to have on hand, because you are t-i-r-e-d. 

And if you’ve got a baby in the house, you need food ideas that baby can feed themselves, so you can sit down for a hot minute.

Details—

Breakfast: a @wymansfruit cup, clementine, and homemade chocolate chip larabar copycat recipe that I keep in the freezer for grab and go.

AM snack: this is weird but Emilia asks for chickpeas all the time, so she had some chickpeas, blueberries, and chocolate chips.

Lunch: scrambled eggs, wheat bread, apple

PM snack: peanut butter crackers (I usually buy the mini ones at Trader Joe’s)

Dinner: @kidfreshfoods pizza dipping strips (it was just me and Emilia for dinner this night so we split the box), with the marinara it comes with for dipping, snap peas, and a piece of jicama that she didn’t want to try, and a cup of milk!
Your fear is legitimate— if you give them access Your fear is legitimate— if you give them access to the GOOD stuff, like chocolate chips...how are you gonna get them to like less exciting foods?

The truth is, competing with dessert foods is not easy. But ELIMINATING them doesn’t make the competition go away.

You get to be the gatekeeper on how often you offer sweets. And you also get to say, “sorry, that’s all the chocolate chips we have with lunch, you can have the other foods on your plate.”

In my reel yesterday I talked about allowing them to add condiments to their meals, including things like chocolate chips, honey, and syrup.

And some of you asked, “won’t they turn into Buddy the Elf and drench all their food in a bucket of syrup???!”

Here are some helpful guidelines. 

1. You don’t need to offer an array of condiments at every single meal. I typically reserve this for the times when they complain about what I’ve made, so I’ll say, “here how about some peanut butter on it,” or, “wanna shake on some sprinkles?” It’s a tool to get their buy-in to try something.

2. When you offer sweets regularly, kids become less fixated on them. If you give them one tiny drop of honey and then snatch it away, they’re more likely to go overboard if/when they get free reign with it.

3. Sometimes they do only eat the chocolate chips or lick the condiment off the food and consume nothing else. Pretty much all kids do it at some point. This usually means that either they’re not very hungry, or there’s literally nothing else on the plate that they like. 

4. And sometimes, they just really want more chocolate chips and will get sassy and flip out when you say they can’t have anymore. And if they’re over 2 and can grasp the concept, I encourage you to hold your ground and stick to what you already offered. Don’t get them more chocolate chips, don’t get them another food. They may not eat anything else. And they may be cranky and hungry a little later. But they learned the lesson that what mom made for the meal is what I get. And if I’m hungry then I should go ahead and eat it.
I hate being in pictures but it’s 100x easier wh I hate being in pictures but it’s 100x easier when I have a real reason to smile 😍 every day I thank God for giving me my husband and my kids.

We are not big on Valentine’s Day in our house (like my husband and I never even acknowledge it 🤷🏻‍♀️) but I did take some time today to explain to my kids what unconditional love means, and how they will always, always have that from me and their Dad. I feel so blessed to give that to them and that I have a partner to give that to them too. I know I am lucky.

Some of you know my story, that my dad abandoned our family when I was 15. I spent so many years thinking there was something wrong with me, that if anyone really got to know me... they’d know I wasn’t deserving of love. 

And while that’s a really vulnerable thing to share so publicly, I’m sharing it bravely because the unconditional love I have for my kids has helped me see that I too am deserving of that for myself. And YOU are deserving of that, Mama.

I think our kids teach us a beautiful lesson about love, in how they love so fully and deeply. They don’t care what our jobs are, what we accomplished today, how much money we make, what mistakes we’ve made...they are madly in love with you simply because you are their mom or their dad. And you don’t need to DO anything to be deserving of that love — you simply are.

Be very cautious of claims that tests like everlywell can accurately tell you which foods you need to avoid.
