QUESTION

Samantha asked, “My youngest daughter just turned 1-year-old on Easter and my question is about snacking. She seems to be hungry all the time now that I’m weaning her from breastfeeding and is always wanting snacks between meals. So I’m wondering what healthy and not messy snack would be good for her to eat between meals, so that I’m not putting her in the high chair like 6 times a day?

ANSWER

During the period of time when you’re transitioning off of breastfeeding, off of bottles, or off of formula, it is always tough. Since the amount of breastmilk or formula is decreasing, we need to make up for that with food.

Personally, I relate. They say no baby self-weans before 1, but both my kids did. With my daughter, Emilia, she was always hungry, and would never take a bottle. I talked to a lactation consultant who suggested a bedtime snack (real food) and it was the biggest help!
