Kid-Approved Homemade Snickers Bars

This healthier twist on snickers is to die for, and couldn’t be simpler to make! It’s truly one of those recipes that you can’t screw it up even if you tried. (Unlike the Bluey cupcakes my daughter and I tried to make that we promptly threw in the trash after one bite.)

Why You’ll Love Frozen Homemade Snickers With Dates
You know how sometimes the healthier version of a treat is such a let down? Like, you’ll eat it, but you’re not excited about it?
Not these!
While it’s not the exact same thing as a Snickers, you and your fam will still happily devour these snickers made with dates.
And you’ll be glad that everyone is eating something that is not ultra-processed!
These babies have wholesome ingredients, almost no added sugar, and a little bit of fat and protein to make that satisfaction go further!

Homemade Snickers Recipe
A layer of caramely dates, a layer of smooth nut butter, a layer of rich dark chocolate, and a nice crunch of flaky sea salt and crushed peanuts- and that’s it! A simple, bite-sized dessert or snack that is sure to be a favorite of kids and adults alike.
Homemade Snickers Ingredients
- 16 large medjool dates, pitted
- 1/3 cup drippy nut butter (I used Trader Joe’s unsalted)
- 1/3 cup dark chocolate chips
- Sprinkle sea salt
- 1/4 cup of chopped peanuts
You can use another nut butter if you prefer! Almond butter works great, too.
Homemade Snickers Instructions
- Open up dates (make sure they’re pitted) and butterfly them out. Lay them side by side, flat against the bottom of an 8×8 pan lined with parchment paper.
- Lay another piece of parchment over top of the dates and use the flat bottom of a drinking glass to press them down and into one another so you get one consistent layer of dates all smashed together.
- Spread 1/3 cup drippy peanut butter evenly on top of the date layer.
- Melt 1/3 cup of chocolate chips in a small sauce pan over medium low heat (stirring the whole time to make sure no parts burn and all clumps melt). Or, microwave for 30 second intervals, stirring in between, until melted.
- Spread the liquid chocolate mixture over top, covering the dates and nut butter.
- Sprinkle flaky sea salt and crushed peanuts on top and freeze for 6+ hours or overnight.
- Remove from the pan with parchment paper and cut into bite sized pieces. Store in the freezer.

Can I make this nut-free?
Well, these homemade frozen Snickers are pretty nut-heavy, but I do think you could swap in some granola butter if you are working with a nut-allergy! Skip the crushed peanuts on top, too. I might do pumpkin seeds on top in that case!
Is the sugar from dates better than just plain old sugar in a recipe?
Dates are definitely very sweet and still have a pretty high sugar content, but what I like about using real food ingredients in my recipes as opposed to just baking/cooking with cane sugar is that you also get the other benefits from the food itself. For example, dates are actually a good source of several B vitamins, potassium, magnesium, and copper. They’re also a great source of fiber. So while you’re still eating “sugar” as far as your body processes it, you’re also getting some additional benefits from the food itself, which is a win in my book.
Recipe Tip
Make sure you let these freeze for long enough so that they get time to really congeal and harden. They can be a goopy mess if they’re too melty or not frozen enough. But they’re a perfect bite sized treat when they’re frozen.
ALSO – if you want to make them extra decadent, I would add a layer of melted chocolate on the bottom too, before you put down the dates! I haven’t tried it yet but I want to!
