It’s Hard for Me, Too: Dietitian Mom Confessions

For the past week, my toddler has asked me to eat m&ms at least 5 times every day. And at least one of those times he ends up crying over it.

I send him with a pb & j sandwich to school 90% of the time. Those perfect lunchboxes you see on social media with homemade sushi, homemade gluten free sugar free cookies, and exotic fruits? That never happens in my house. And I have yet to figure out how any parent can ever make that happen and manage to do anything else with their day.

We only have dinner all together as a family about twice a month. And that’s about how often I get around to showering these days.  Continue reading

Sweets and Treats: How to Handle Dessert with Kids

You just finished lunch and your toddler is asking for cookies. What do you do? Now it’s 4 pm, and they’re asking for cookies again. It’s dinner time, and they’re asking AGAIN! Do you give in?

Kids can be very…persistent. (I kind of want to say annoying, haha!) We all love them dearly, but when you hear the same question for the 20th time that day, you just about want to run out the front door screaming and pulling your hair out.

Clean Your Plate, or Don’t?

Not to throw my husband under the bus…but I had to get on his case about something the other day. Poor guy, he really wasn’t trying to do anything wrong. My son asked for a cookie during dinner, and Ben told him to eat what’s on his plate first. And of course I couldn’t keep myself from whisper-yelling to him, “we don’t want to force him to eat it if he doesn’t want it!” And now I don’t even remember anymore if we gave him a cookie or not!

Paleo Baby Food: Is it a Scam?

Some dietitians are calling the new Paleo baby food pouches a scam. What do you think?

I have seen a lot of criticism from RDs about the new Serenity Kids Paleo baby food pouches. I guess I’m in the minority but I honestly don’t see a problem with the product, besides the insanely high price of $4.50 per pouch! 

First things first. Most babies do NOT need to eat Paleo to be healthy. (I don’t say “all” babies because some may have allergies or other reasons to exclude certain food groups from their diet.) But foods that are Paleo can certainly fit in a baby’s healthy diet. Continue reading

Healthy Halloween Treats for Trick-or-Treating

I will admit…I’m not much of a Halloween person. I don’t really like dressing up, I don’t like showering kids with sugary treats, and I’m not big on Halloween decorations, besides pumpkins. Although I do LOVE dressing up my son and wish I could do it more often. His first Halloween he was the CUTEST KOALA BEAR IN THE WORLD. I’m not biased at all. 

Last year we experienced our first Trunk or Treat with my son’s pre-school. When I got the email about the event, I kind of panicked. These teachers and other moms knew I was in graduate school for Nutrition…surely I couldn’t go handing out SUGAR to their sweet little children. And if I did, they’d be like, “WHY IS THE HEALTHY LADY GIVING OUT CANDY?!” Am I right??  Continue reading
